For Every Girl

The movie was amazing. The adaptation of the choreopoem to the screenplay was amazing.
The cast is amazing and the integration of the poems throughout the movie were smooth and
easy to comprehend. I love poetry , especially ones that may relate to me. A good many of
them did and it was the poems along with the situation that brought me to tears. Ntozake
Shange is a vivid , very conscious writer. Her words paint a very clear picture of people and
their situations. So many people from so many different walks of life and who are any color
could relate to the situations and characters in this movie. That is why I would recommend
everyone, man, boy, girl woman to go see this movie (not necessarily child because of the
language and violence and sexual content). You can indeed take "colored" to mean any race
because women  of all races go through the issues the women in the movie encounter and
tackle everyday. The play/ choreopoem "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide
When The Rainbow Is Enuf" is all about getting through when falling down. It is about
eventually getting up and finding yourself, your place, your "rainbow"

*Even though I haven't read the book/play yet I plan to. I ordered it offline and it is en route as we speak :)

I'm in the purple * pause the music player*

The funny thing about 30 second commercials like these is that it takes all day to film! lol We started literally at 10 in the morning and finished at ten that evening. That is why the blinds are closed because it was so dark outside. There were a million takes and only about three breaks. This is a take from later in the day maybe about nine o clock. They realized before this take that my shirt had Run DMC on it and that I had to button up my cardigan. That meant that all the takes before weren't even eligible.. smh.. well the wardrobe lady had chosen my outfit so I was kinda blown. That is also why my hair looks frazzled =P. All of us were pretty tired and ready to go home.

Overall it was a fun experience, got to meet a bunch of interesting kids and in between takes we were geekin just like we were in a real classroom (we were actors). I also got to be in a real commercial and meet Tony Danza!  If you watch A&E all day and don't walk away , you'll probably see it and I've heard it's on Comcast now. I was beyond excited when I first saw it and I'm looking forward to more opportunities like that. If  it never happens I'll still be satisfied and grateful that I even got this chance.

Wow

No Loser, No Weeper

'I hate to lose something, '
then she bent her head
'even a dime, I wish I was dead.
I can't explain it. No more to be said.
Cept I hate to lose something.'

'I lost a doll once and cried for a week.
She could open her eyes, and do all but speak.
I believe she was took, by some doll-snatching-sneak
I tell you, I hate to lose something.'

'A watch of mine once, got up and walked alway.
It had twelve numbers on it and for the time of day.
I'll never forget it and all I can say
Is I really hate to lose something.'

'Now if I felt that way bout a watch and a toy,
What you think I feel bout my lover-boy?
I ain't threatening you madam, but he is my
evening's joy.
And I mean I really hate to lose something.'

____________________________________________________________________

When I read this poem,I could relate to it because I remembered how I used to love someone who I though was special and ultimately irreplaceable. This poem by Maya Angelou made me recognize that when our mothers and aunts say "I know what you're going through" they probably- no , most definitely do. Love and Pain , which is one in the same transcends time, knows no age or  color. They same kinds of issues we have with boys and men, our mothers , grandmothers , great- grandmothers aunts and cousins went through too. Just by looking at them being "okay",  & seeing that their world didn't end because of a boy, we can come to the conclusion that we too will get to that point and we will be okay. Just like my mother always told me , but I couldn't believe it at the exact time she was telling me, " This, too shall pass". My mother was right. Every little thing that I used to think seemed so devastating is not such a big deal anymore, and I am able to look back and learn from my experiences.

I used to think that losing some boy or another was the end of the world, that there was no other
"toy" . I used to 'really hate to lose something too'. Now I realize that if its meant to me to have, I will have it. If not, there are plenty of other "toys" in the world . At the end of every day , "It's not that serious!" lol :)
